CO2 Laser Assisted Stapedectomy or Stapedotomy

A stapedectomy is the procedure used to correct otosclerosis and is done under local or general anesthesia through the ear canal with an operating microscope. It removes the immobilized stapes bone and replaces it with a prosthetic device. The prosthetic device allows the bones of the middle ear to resume their normal movement and restores hearing. Since otosclerosis can affect both ears, the procedure is performed on each ear at different times starting with the ear having the worst hearing.

If this becomes a problem, your doctor may recommend that you have this procedure by either traditional or through CO2 laser surgery.

Cholesteatoma

Cholesteatoma is a type of chronic infection that cause skin growth in the middle ear. This skin builds up overtime and may erode the bony structure and cause hearing problems. CO2 laser surgery is often used to reach this difficult area of the middle ear, and because of the nature of the type of infection, surgery may need to be repeated.
