Treatment Options: Home Remedies

Self-treatment usually focuses on the physical symptoms (like pain) affecting your ear and, as such, may not address the underlying cause for it.

Please remember that home remedies are not endorsed by YourENThealth and that you should always check with your physician before trying any remedy.

Heat

Some people have experienced results ranging from no change in symptoms to complete relief. The sources of heat range from a heating pad to wrapping a warmed object with a towel and placing it next to the ear.

Herbal treatments

The number of herbal treatments that people have used are varied and numerous. Most generally include solutions of oils or dissolved herbs that are placed (a few drops) into the affected ear. Please note that these are not endorsed by yourENThealth.

Over the counter products

These include eardrops and pain relieving products such as aspirin, Tylenol, Excedrin and others.

Please note that when using self treatment that includes the use of over the counter products, always consult your doctor first and be sure to read the instructions regarding who should use them and the proper dosages. There are many products that can cause adverse affects to people on medications to treat conditions such as high blood pressure, diabetes, glaucoma etc.

If you have a special condition that is being treated routinely by a doctor, please consult with your doctor before using any over-the-counter or herbal remedy.
